Changes in Hip-hop/Rap

Hip-Hop/Rap formed together and became more of a culture rather than just a music genre to those involved. It is the movement of the american people from the streets coming together and showing their artistry through music, dance and graffiti. Rap and Hip-Hop was appreciated more at the start when it was an actual part of peoples lives where emotions and real life stories were expressed through the music.

Today there is a stereotypical idea of what this genre of music presents, this being drugs, sex and money. Negative rap overpowers the positive and most radio stations, record labels and television is to blame as they help to promote this as this is now the stereotype they want the audience to see the genre being as a whole. The appreciation of rap nowadays is similar to that of rock which lost audiences due to commercialism by mainstream labels. The big stars that were once loved by smaller audiences are now simply being recreated by new mainstream artists who cant do the job half as good and messages to what the music really means is getting mixed with this new stereotype making hip-hop and rap lose its original aims.

Rap use to be an expression but it is now a overload to viewers of degrading filth filling youth with the wrong ideas of what is good in life presenting less and less clothes worn in the music videos which is leading to a new title of 'soft porn'. The more negative a song is the more exposure and air time it receives which is why rap has been stereotyped the 'arrogant' title. Not all rap and hip-hop artists are a part of the arrogant self centred portrayal but these artists are harder to find as they repel this new modern day stereotype meaning they get less limelight. These artists who take a 'different' approach to the genre dont go along with the expections so the media seperate them by  presenting them less and giving them less noticability which isnt fair at all but it highlights the power the media has.
This relates to the hypodermic needle theory were the audience are injected with information that they instantly believe as they are not told anything else which could make them doubt it. It is often biased and one sided controlling them into a belief portrayed by what they media want them to believe.

This unbalance is what forms the stereotype and ideology for Hip-Hop and Rap as the more times it is shown the more times the good is forgotton as it presents a clear overpowerment forming a belief of what the genres like as a whole. If the media equally presented both the good and bad, the whole negative idea of what the Hip-Hop/Rap genre is about would be completly different showing that not all artist who are a part of this music group are arrogant and sing about drugs, sex and money. It is what the media has injected in us as an audience and that is not the real truth of this sub culture based movement. This brings contrast to the formation of this genre as the media wasnt as big or as powerful so peoples opinions wernt influenced by biased information. People were allowed to see the genre for what it really was and that was people expressing their emotions and feelings but not all on a negative base. These artists do still exist in the genre but just like most global media forms the majority has been changed by the power of the people we dont see making us believe that this is what its like and this is what is always has been and always will be.
